Keep your blog content shareable – all year long

evergreen blog content I recently came across a fantastic marketing blog post, it was insightful, informative, well written and I thought this would be perfect to share with my followers and friends! And I would have, instantly – if it hadn’t been for one little, tiny, itty-bitty detail: the post started off with “Now that the holiday season is behind us…” And it is currently early March. That line alone killed my desire to share the post. If I was really motivated I might have added it to my editorial calendar for mid month next January but I wasn’t concerned about content for next January – I wanted relevant, timely, interesting content NOW!

Bah Humbug! I won’t share!

So my tip: unless your blog content is holiday or date specific don’t reference it in your article, by doing so you make your content irrelevant and dated long before its time. Instead, write your blog posts to be timeless so they stay relevant as long as your subject is relevant. If you want to spin it to promote it during a specific holiday or time of year use your social media tools to do that – write an introductory blurb to introduce the article when you post it to Facebook, Google+ and a nice short one for Twitter!

Keep this in mind for the photos you select to accompany your post as well. People will be less likely to share a post or feel it is still relevant in the middle of their summer if your accompanying photo shows snow on the ground or a decorated house.

Don’t forget you can edit your posts too! If you want to maximize on a particular holiday season or date by mentioning it in your post or showing a timely photo go ahead – but consider updating your post once the reference is no longer relevant so it continues to be shareable for months to come.

Other references to consider that can inadvertently date your post and make them appear old and untimely:  political figure references, pop culture references, calling anything ‘new’ or ‘the latest’, add to the comments if you can think of any more references or statements to avoid to help keep your content shareable – all year long.
